Yep, you heard it right! We’re already five days into National Sandwich Month! What started as a way for the Earl of Sandwich to eat and keep at least one hand free while playing in an intense poker game, the sandwich has evolved into many creative variations since its 1762 inception. From a patty melt to a New Orleans-style po’boy, from a rueben to a BLT, whatever you mash between two slices of some sort of bread-life matter, becomes a sandwich. Check out these seven out-of-the-ordinary sandwiches you can construct and consume at home!
Introducing the new-age BLT! Start with two slices of all-American white bread, cloaking each one in a layer of mayonnaise and quenching with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. In a building blocks fashion, pile on three-to-four slices of bacon crisped to your liking, SLICED AVOCADO, leaf lettuce and thick-sliced tomatoes. After the first bite you’ll be like a 2007 version Britney Spears singing, “Gimme Gimme more, Gimme more.”
2. Croque Monsieur
Don’t let the French name fool you, this is nothing more than a bourgeois version of the classic grilled ham and cheese sandwich. Dress two slices of thick Texas toast with melted butter. Fill the middle with slices upon slices, upon slices of deli-shaved ham, Gruyere or Comte cheese and Dijon mustard. Pangrill or toast in a panini maker (if you’re fancy like that!) until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted beyond the point of gooeyness. YAAAAAAAAASSSS!
3. Fish Sandwich with Chili-Lime Dressing
An upgrade from the McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish, this fish sandwich aims to please! Immerse your fish (grouper is recommended) in cornmeal and once it’s completely coated in batter, pan-fry on each side until crisp. Separately, conjure up the dressing by mixing together mayonnaise, lime juice, chili powder and minced garlic. Cover two toasted buns with the dressing, place the crisp fish on the bottom bun and then add lettuce and sliced cilantro and tomatoes.
Just hear me out before you turn off to this nut-tastic sandwich. Choose one of the following combinations: banana, honey, and almonds; avocado and peanuts; cooked sweet potatoes and hazelnuts; apricots and almonds; peaches and pistachios; or roasted beets and walnuts. Mash your chosen combination together into a spreadable consistency and smear on top of a slice toasted wheat bread. Top off with a sprinkle of chopped nuts and it’ll be a party in your mouth after the first bite!
5. Lyonnaise Sandwich
This sandwich is a deconstructed version of the traditional French Salade Lyonnaise that’s made with frisée or curly endive, hot bacon and a freshly poached egg. In sandwich form, you top a extra crispy slice of toasted bread with frisée (or other bitter greens). Blanket it with a slab of bacon (pancetta if you’re fancy!) and a poached or fried egg on top. If you’re like me and you need a sauce, drizzle your creation with an olive oil/wine vinegar mixture or Dijon mustard. The Egg McMuffin doesn’t hold a candle to the Lyonnaise. .
6. Turkish Lamb Pocket
For a little Mediterranean flare, sauté ground lamb with chopped onions, minced garlic and ground cinnamon. Stuff into a pita with freshly chopped tomatoes and shredded romaine lettuce. In lieu of sour cream, top with a dollop of plain Greek-style yogurt and quench it with a squeeze of lemon. If you like, sprinkle on a bit of minced onion.
7. PB, B & B
Texas toast SLATHERED in creamy peanut butter with strategically placed layers of crisp bacon and sliced bananas in between. I’ll wait while you wipe the drool off your chin.
